What if Tinker Bell ended up working for Captain Hook? What if Aurora knew the truth about her curse? What if Mufasa gave up his throne? You might have heard of the New York Times Best-Selling series A Twisted Tale, but a Twisted Tale Anthology brings a vast set of short stories written by the same authors who have worked on previous Twisted Tale novels. This anthology is made up of 16 “what-ifs” based on popular and underrated Disney classics. Reading each story feels like watching a Disney short. From princesses like Snow White to Anastasia, many stories share common themes of love, female empowerment, and confidence. A very notable story was “Et Voilà” where Ratatouille icon Remy meets Collete before Linguini. The Disney film is one of my favorites, and I didn’t want the short prose to completely change my memory and view on the story. But to my surprise, I still thoroughly enjoyed reading it, as much of the comedy and tone fitted the movie. I also really appreciated the focus on a female’s role in the Chef industry, which is something that the original story does not highlight as much. However, there were certain stories that I found to be somewhat like fan-fiction. One of the stories is about Mulan becoming the Emperor’s advisor. Even though this story brings a creative adventure that makes Mulan a hero by the end of the day, much of the plot seemed forced and rushed to only benefit the perspective others have on Mulan. But despite this, I thought this story was very solid, and I really liked how the author acknowledged Mulan’s presence as the only woman in the Emperor’s advisory group. Nevertheless, A Twisted Tale Anthology is a great book for anyone who wants to see their favorite Disney characters again for new adventures. I did not read any of the previous books in the series and I still really liked it! Final Rating: 3.5/5
